How Link ECU helped Salford Racing get on track for the first time at Formula Student 2024

Formula Student 2024 was a monumental year for our team. It saw us advancing through the Statics events and getting on track for the first time in our history. We made major progress by implementing a new ECU from Link Engine Management which was specified for us by Chris from Crisp Tuning, who spent endless hours tuning our car.

Engine Control Units (ECUs) are minicomputers that monitor and manage engine performance to ensure the car runs smoothly. They detect engine inefficiencies and send signals about any components that aren't operating optimally. ECUs ensure efficient combustion, and complete diagnostics checks of the car's functions, like idle speed, braking, among other things.

Prior to the 2024 Formula Student season, Salford Racing used an outdated ECU that ran in hexadecimals. We saw little progress in those four years because that ECU model had minimal diagnostic capabilities. Due to these tuning difficulties, our car never made it to the Dynamics events of the Formula Student competition. That is, until our partnership with Link ECU and Crisp Tuning.

With the package Link Engine Management provided, and the unfailing support from Chris from Crisp Tuning, we were able to tune a difficult engine in the four months leading up to the 2024 competition.

Their ECU not only helped us get our engine running correctly for the first time but also helped us run faultlessly throughout the competition. The partnership pushed the team to new heights as the versatility of that ECU created amazing opportunities to race at the competition.

The Link ECU, combined with Chris’ incredible tuning expertise, resulted in us having a fully functioning car in preparation for Silverstone 2024 which ran flawlessly on track.

We would like to thank Link Engine Management for their amazing ECU and continued partnership with Salford Racing.

Crisp Tuning is a car performance centre and supplier in Wakefield, West Yorkshire where Chris, the owner, is the head mechanic and tuner. We would not have had such fantastic results this year without Chris' dedication and tuning expertise.

We look forward to our continued partnership with Link Engine Management and Crisp Tuning for the Formula Student 2025 competition, where we expect to exceed our previous performance.
