Salford Racing Team Principal’s Vision for 2025

“Look back to look ahead” - John Maxwell

Abdul Atia, Salford Racing Team’s Principal recently shared his thoughts on his vision for the 2024/2025 Season. But before looking ahead to his aspirations for the team, he reflected on the previous season and how he plans on positioning the Salford Racing Team to achieve even greater success at the annual IMechE Formula Student competition.

What is your fondest memory from Formula Student 2024?

Every year before that, we never passed the noise test, and to see us pass the noise test that first time, knowing that was the first ever step we’ve made, I was almost crying.

Those words represented a major milestone for the entire team, who competed in the two major events of the competition: the Static and Dynamic events.

Static events like the Business Presentation, Design, Cost, and Lap Time Simulation offer university teams the chance to earn points in each category.

Should a team make it through these scrutineering stages, their car is tested in the Dynamic events: Acceleration, Skip Pad, Sprint, Endurance, and Fuel Efficiency.

Looking back at the Static events

In the Formula Student 2024 Static Events, Salford Racing scored a total of 191.2 points.

What do you think of the team’s performance in the Static events?

We did have a strong car, but I do think that as a team, we could have excelled on the business side.

While the team excelled in some events, greater preparation in other events would have resulted in a better performance.

To improve the team's performance in this phase of the competition, Abdul intends to allocate resources towards skills training and workshops provided by partners and sponsors. He will also ensure the team competes in all events, as every point contributes to overall success.

Looking back at the Dynamic events

Formula Student 2024 marked the first time in Salford Racing’s history that Car 61 arrived on track to compete in the Dynamic events. Though the team scored a total of 220.4 points in the Dynamic Events, Car 61, unfortunately, wasn't entered in the Acceleration or Skip Pad events.

Looking ahead to Formula Student 2025

I want our car to be present at every event and I trust my team to deliver on this commitment, not just for ourselves, but for our sponsors, who have consistently placed their faith in us to deliver on their investment.

So how do we plan on getting there?

Abdul shared three objectives:

  1. Tighten timelines and delivery deadlines. The car’s components need to be ready earlier so more testing can be accomplished ahead of Formula Student 2025.

  2. Foster better discipline among team members. Abdul intends to be a fair and firm leader for the sake of the team’s performance and to unlock every team member’s potential.

  3. Build a more reliable car. While last year’s car was a strong contender that the team was immensely proud of, management has visualised key design improvements that will generate more power, more endurance - better performance.
